Mask Series is a small selection of art from a project exploring masculinity and aging in America. In the media, we often idealize (and sexualize) younger, muscular, and athletic men as ideal. But as I’m getting older, I’m interested in capturing men who are also aging, whose bodies, despite best preservation tactics, are starting to fail them, or never fit into the idealized masculine mold.
This series of portraits aims to capture the raw and unflattering aspects of aging – flesh up against glass, wrinkled skin, and fat spreading – but in the most beautiful way possible. My final images have intentionally not been digitally altered, composited, or color corrected in editing software. And whenever possible, I like to exhibit them as large as the gallery space allows.
